Endosseous dental implants are becoming a common treatment option in the practice of dentistry and have shown great promise for being able to restore dental function and esthetics. Spontaneous exposure of endosseous dental implants is a complication that can be indicative of later implant failure, but few definitive studies have been conducted concerning this histological phenomenon. In this study, literature review of relevant clinical and laboratory studies, along with clinical observations, were conducted to determine the histopathological factors associated with the spontaneous exposure, and subsequent failure, of endosseous dental implant systems during phase I (implant phase) of treatment. Fifteen peer-reviewed studies (1997-2001) of endosseous dental implant complications and failure, published over a five-year period, were reviewed. Clinical observations (N=95) of maxillary and mandibular (edentulous and partial dentition) surgical placement of single-unit, endosseous dental implants were conducted over a three-month period, to gain further knowledge of treatment procedures. All patients were in good health, and no control group was used. The studies were initially categorized by ascending chronology to evaluate the development of a definitive etiology. The studies were then classified as comprehensive or specialized, and evaluated. Initial results indicated that several factors involving the technique-sensitive surgical procedure contribute to the primary, soft tissue, inflammation response of spontaneous dental implant exposure. It was also noted that no definitive, uniform protocol exists for diagnosing this complication. T. Dental implantsDental implants are surgically fixed substitutes for roots of missing teeth. Embedded in the jawbone, they act as anchors for a replacement tooth, also known as a crown, or a full set of replacement teeth.
Dental Implants Ordinary dentures, generally made of plastic, are custom-fitted to match and adhere to the upper or lower jaw or made to clamp on to remaining teeth with metal supports or bridges. But today there are dental implants, which add a method of attaching the denture with metal anchors directly and permanently to the jaw bone with no need to ever be removed by the wearer.

Hagerstown businessman Scott Hoover went hunting in South Africa last September but he wasnt on vacation. Hoover is vice president, director of East Coast operations and part-owner of Outdoor Connection, Inc., so his African trip was really an inspection tour and just part of his job (although the photos do show him smiling as he holds the horns of his trophy kudu and gemsbok). Hoovers company can arrange anything from trout fishing in Montana or cougar hunting in Utah to caribou in Labrador or alligator hunts in Florida. The most popular trips, says Hoover, are fishing and hunting in Alaska, marlin fishing in Mexicos Sea of Cortez, and Ontario fishing camps on lakes so remote that they are only accessible by float planes. Although the emphasis is on hunting and fishing, some of the outfitters also offer white water rafting, summer pack trips and dude ranch experiences during their off-season. Outdoor Connection was created by a Minnesota businessman, Bob Laddusaw, who liked to go on hunting and fishing trips. After people began asking him to help plan their trips, he started Sportsmans Adventures in 1986. In two years, the business had grown too big for one location, so he renamed it Outdoor Connection and began franchising the concept.

One of Kenyas finest game parks is under threat from uncontrolled development of hotels and lodges, conservationists claim. The building of four new hotels, which would more than double the number of beds in Samburu National Reserve, has been criti- cised environmental groups which warn that elephant migratory corridors and lion breeding habitats could be destroyed. “These current proposed developments are all along the river. There will be a huge impact on the area most heavily utilised by the wildlife,” she said. “We have to be very careful how we plan for the future. If landscape planning in Samburu is not managed it will have an adverse effect on the environment and the people who rely on tourism for their livelihoods.” Save the Elephants had been threatened with expulsion from Samburu, where the group carries out conservation work protecting the regions 5,500 elephants, at the end of April. The group was given until tomorrow to leave the reserve after being accused by Samburu County Council of “publishing malicious reports”. But the charity earned a last-minute reprieved after local councillors committed to protecting the reserve managed to overturn the order. Councillor Christopher Lalkalepi said Save the Elephants was now “in safe hands. They will not be chased away.”
A CAMBRIDGE University graduate has been trampled to death by an elephant while trying to photograph it during an overland expedition from Britain to South Africa. Second Lieutenant Edward Harrison, 28, a member of the universitys Officer Training Corps, is believed to have woken at dawn and wandered off on his own to photograph wild animals at the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya on Sunday morning. Fellow travellers were woken by the sound of the elephant and later discovered his body outside the secure compound of the Sopa safari lodge.

Some examples he gives are lies by omission, others an attempt to be politically correct - but inaccuracies are rife, nonetheless.

THE GOVERNMENT in Thailand is considering scrapping a 60-year ban on a powerful home-grown stimulant in an effort to help nearly three million people beat their addiction to “speed”. A government crackdown earlier this year on traffickers of ya ba pills unleashed a killing spree that left 2,274 suspected dealers dead. Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, claims 90 per cent of drug supplies to Thailand have been stopped and says he is committed to rooting out the remaining dealers this year. There are an estimated 2.75 million people who habitually use speed, giving Thailand the worlds highest addiction rate. Pinya Chuayplod, a Thai senator, told the Bangkok Post that kratom could help drug users to overcome their cravings.

Ironically, the trade has been stimulated by the Governments decision last year to ban “magic mushrooms”, which contain the hallucinogenic psilocin, which had been sold through the internet and in places such as Camden market in north London. The ban left a gap in the market, with consumers and vendors looking for new products. Mark Evans, of every-onedoesit.com, a leading internet-based mail order company, said the increase in trade since last year had been “massive”. “There is a huge gap in the market. These consumers are not going to disappear, they are just looking for alternatives.” Mr Evans, whose company also sells cannabis seeds, said there had been a change in the culture of people who consumed recreational drugs. “We do a lot of festivals and speak to people who say they are fed up with dealers and taking drugs - like ecstasy - where they cannot always be confident that they know what is in the pill.”

REFINANCED GRANDFATHERED DEBT QUADS AS grandfathered debt if the mortgage proceeds do not exceed the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. Home mortgage interest expense is deductible if certain requirements are met. In general, mortgage interest expense is deductible only if the home is collateral for the debt (secured debt). If the borrower cannot pay the debt, the lender can use the home to satisfy the loan. Interest expense paid on home acquisition debt, home equity debt, and grandfather debt is generally considered deductible. A mortgage taken out after October 13, 1987, to acquire, build, or substantially improve a qualified residence is classified as home acquisition debt. Qualifying debt is limited to $1 million ($500,000 each for married filing separately). The $1 million limitation is reduced (but not below zero) by any grandfathered debt. If home acquisition debt is refinanced, the new debt will qualify as home acquisition debt only up to the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. The interest attributable to the additional debt will be nondeductible personal interest unless it qualifies as home equity debt.

Despite the great benefits of the current system, however, some analysts have raised concerns about the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and consistency of consumer credit records and about the effects of data limitations on the availability and cost of credit. These concerns have grown as creditors have begun to rely more on credit history scores (statistical characterizations of an individuals creditworthiness based exclusively on credit record information) and less on labor-intensive reviews of the detailed information in credit reports. Moreover, decisionmakers in areas unrelated to consumer credit, including employment screening and underwriting of property and casualty insurance, increasingly depend on credit records, as studies have shown that such records have predictive value. A previous article in this publication examined in detail the credit records of a large, nationally representative sample of individuals as of June 30, 1999. (1) That analysis revealed the breadth and depth of the information in credit records. It also found, however, that key aspects of the data may be ambiguous, duplicative, or incomplete and that such limitations have the potential to harm or to benefit consumers. Although the earlier analysis contributed to the debate about the quality of the information in credit records, it did not attempt to quantify the effects of data limitations on consumers access to credit. To date, publicly available information about the extent of data quality problems has been limited, as has research on the effects of those problems. (2) The lack of information has inhibited discussion of the problems and of the appropriate ways to address them.

Four lots were auctioned: property of the rolling stock repair plant of Kybyshev Railways, the Ardecha coach repair depot in Volgograd, property of the coach section at the Bureya plant in Belogorsk, and coach repair section Kihlok at Chita depot. The latter was not sold because of a lack of bidders, and RZD says it will re-auction it at a later date.
WHATs the hottest commodity in business today? It just may be business coaches, as entrepreneurs across the country scramble to find personal gurus to help make them better at what they do.Sounds like a consultant, you say? Not exactly. While in some cases consultants also work as coaches, the differences lies in the aim and intensity of the service. Coaches offer a one-on-one relationship with entrepreneurs thats far more personal than in other consulting arrangements. They work behind the scenes, with their primary mission to support, develop and empower the entrepreneur–and, eventually, put themselves out of business. While consultants are in the business of selling their expertise, coaches are in the business of bringing out the best in you.”A coach enables you to become self-sufficient and self-reliant,” explains Helen Rothberg, a business professor and coach at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. “I teach my clients how to `fish for themselves, so they only need my services for a limited time. My aim is to put control back in the hands of the people who own the business, not in the hands of experts.”
READERS OF this newspaper will notice that Business andSports appear back-to-back in the same section. It is no accident that they are adjacent. Increasingly, professionals in both occupations believe the way to optimise a teams performance on field or pitch is also the way to run a business. Stephenson organises a series of early morning talks, “Breakfast Briefings”, for PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Irish Independent. Recently, her guest speaker was Warren Gatland, formerly of New Zealands All Blacks and now coach of the Irish national rugby team. “There is now a huge parallel between sport and business,” he says. “I dont see any difference in what I am doing with the thirty people I am involved with in the Irish rugby team and managing a business, which means providing the environment structure, training, support and discipline needed to optimise performance.” Limerick, the venue for Gatlands talk, boasts three rugby football clubs. No surprise, then, that 450 business executives were happy to turn up at a hotel at 8am, fresh and ready to give him their undivided attention over breakfast. He began by recalling how on his first Irish assignment - a four- year tenure as coach to the Galway club, the Galwegians - he found that starting from scratch was better then taking on something partly formed. The Galwegians were, in the national vernacular, in “rag order”, said Gatland. “They were in a desperate state. That first week we were going to a match in Sligo, two hours away on the bus. We set a meeting time of 11.00 and at 11.00 I was there with two other players. At 11.15 we had about eight players. At 11.30 I said thats it, were going. We had 12 players as we drove out the gate, and picked up two others who were late. “From then on, one of the rules that we established was that if they were going to be late for training, or couldnt make the session, they had to ring me beforehand to let me know so I could make arrangements. That was just one of the things, a bit of discipline, that I brought into the team. The fact that those players were late that time was probably more of a help than a hindrance to me.” A term with the Connaught team followed before he was installed as national team coach. One of the things he learned throughout that time, was that if knowing when to put your foot down is one aspect of management, sharing responsibility is another. “When I arrived back here for my last year, I was told by the committee of the club that we now had a selection panel of five. Part of the success of being with a team that had come from nowhere and was now progressing was that people wanted to have a say. After three or four games I said either they go or I go. I didnt have any problem with people being involved, but if they wanted to be a selector in the team they had to attend every training session, every meeting, and every game, and some people werent quite prepared to invest that level of commitment.” Gatland introduced the policy of assigning additional responsibilities to team members on one of the national teams overseas tours, and he believes it has paid dividends. “One of the things we did was to set up committees within the team. Everyone on that tour was in a committee. There was the social committee and the entertainments committee. We had a banker and a laundry committee. I wanted to take the responsibility away from management and get players to say this is the aspect of the tour that I am on, that I am responsible for. ” Gatland also thinks constructive criticism has a role in employee development. But the effective manager will seek as well as offer it. “I ask the players at the end of each season to evaluate me, and the rest of the management team, anonymously. I find that beneficial in two ways. Firstly to get back some of the positive things that we are working towards as a team. Secondly, I am getting back information that will help me develop further as a coach. Its one of the things I ask business people - would you be prepared to ask your staff to evaluate you, and what sort of honest responses would you get back? If they were negative, what would you do about rectifying the problems identified?” Asked for an appraisal of Gatlands talk, executives and their guests seemed impressed and said the it had given them something useful to take back to their businesses. In one case, at least, it seemed that Gatland was preaching to the converted. Tom Kerin, proprietor of Kerin Project Management, has been inviting annual assessments of management from employees for the past 10 years. “The talk reinforced the values that most managers exhibit,” Kerin said. “Its nice to hear someone at that level dealing with individuals, or rather, individualists, which these athletes very much are. Its good to see how he handles them - which I think is very similar to the way managements should handle top performers in business, both in their own organisation and at client level.”

A LOT OF dollar signs are showing up on cashiers video display terminals at computer stores these days. A major reason is the rising demand for computers from small and medium-sized businesses. Computer retailers expect to sell $4.5 billion worth of equipment this year–$1 billion of it to businesses employing fewer than 100 workers and another $500 million to businesses with 100 to 1,000 employes. This market has attracted Sears, Roebuck Company, the worlds largest retailer. Sears opened five computer stores in the fall of 1981 and expects to have 100 open by the end of this year.
DALLAS — The announcement took the retail industry by surprise: CompUSA to buy rival Computer City for approximately $275 million. It appears to be a win-win situation for all involved. CompUSA will pick up 100 Computer City stores, allowing it to both expand into new markets or shut down duplicate and competitive locations. And Tandy will finally be free to concentrate on its core competency, RadioShack.Thats not a significant outlay for a move that would, in effect, put the competition out of business during a time when CompUSA is struggling to produce profits in a soft computer market.

We often describe TRADOC as the architect of the future. That description is more than casual in that an architect designs buildings and superintends their construction much the way that TRADOC envisions future warfare, explains the capabilities required for the future and monitors the development of materiel. The architects special relationship between the client (user) and the engineer (the builder) is analogous to TRADOCs role representing the soldier during the capabilities development process. An architect must have a vision for the final construction; TRADOC has to lead the Army in articulating a vision of future warfare. An architect must bridge the world of art and science; TRADOC has to understand warfare as both an art and a science. The architect protects the interest of the client in the construction process; TRADOC preserves the integrity of the required specifications as materiel systems are developed. While the architect must understand both form and function, TRADOC must not only describe required capabilities, but also how they go together by means of doctrine to create synergy in joint and Army operations. Finally, while the architect (TRADOC) has the big picture, engineers (Army Staff, Army Materiel Command, the acquisition community and others) develop the blueprints from architectural drawings (concepts for future land power) to ensure our nation always has an Army prepared for the call to duty.

We ask a lot of a kitchen sink. We want it sparkling clean–and looking as good as it did the day we bought it. Yet we dump grease and spaghetti sauce down its drain, pile it high with dirty dishes, scald it with hot water, and freeze it with ice. Its as if one moment we expect it to function as a glamorous hostess, the next as a scullery maid. Its a wonder it doesnt have a breakdown. There is no “best” sink. When choosing a sink, consider what best suits your needs, your design taste, and your kitchen. Then reflect on these questions before beginning the selection process.
The Kitchen Sink: New and Selected Poems by Albert Goldbarth, Graywolf Press, 2007, $26.00 cloth, ISBN 9781555974626. In thirty-five years of writing, Albert Goldbarth has amassed a body of work as substantial and intelligent as that of anyone in his generation. The list of his published books intimidates. Although he has twice won the National Book Critics Circle Award, he remains undigested (though not ignored) by reviewers, academic critics, and the poetry public, what there is of it. Perhaps so prolific a poet risks being taken for granted. More likely, in an era of conspicuous experimentalism, accustomed to the challenges of John Ashbery, Louise Gluck, and Charles Simic, readers and critics have not sufficiently grasped Goldbarths subtler distinction. Yet few poets have done as much to advance the colloquial American voice into areas usually ceded to more formal modes of inquiry. A verse-paragraph (the verse-paragraph, long or short, is Goldbarths most comfortable form) from Wrestling with Each Other illustrates the ease with which he pulls together materials from disparate modes of discourse, warping them through sinuous and delicately modulated enjambments: While history and science merge in this passage, a subtler discourse explores the time-perception that limits our grasp of quantum physics and our own place in the space-time continuum. Voids and sines and serums embody conflicts neither history nor physics can resolve since the paradoxical nature of time as Einstein redefined it refuses to confirm the linear data accumulated by our senses, just as Goldbarths poems arouse but refuse to confirm our instinct for narrative.

But it can help you manage the flow– and thats a lot.Weve assembled 25 common small-business money worries–both large and small– and then come up with 25 ways your computer can make a dent. Many of these solutions can be found in more than one financial program. I always thought you were a stockbroker. Then Nick Budgen would come on from the Victoria Tower end. It says something about politics that in all the long years of Conservative government, Nick Budgen was never picked for the Treasury team, although as time went on it certainly attracted its fair share of duds and duffers. He was inconveniently right about its policies, about inflation and about our venture into the exchange rate mechanism - and on Europe and its single currency, he has been looking righter by the week. Now he is dead. I would like to believe that in todays House of Commons, there is someone as skilled and as awkward as he was in searching Chancellors out.

Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. Losing a small percentage of body weight can make a big difference in reducing an obese persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Yet maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a problem. A German study published in the August 2000 issue of Obesity Research reports that using one meal and one snack replacement product a day can help those whove lost weight keep it off.
The BWHS began in 1995 when 64,500 US African-American women 21 to 69 years old enrolled in a long-term health study of African-American women by completing mail health questionnaires. The present study is based on the 4-year follow-up period from 1995 to 1999. The final sample, 11,196 women, included 9966 who remained nulliparous, 598 nulliparous women who had a first child, 387 primiparous women who had a second child, and 245 women with two or more children who had another child during follow-up. Over a 4-year period of follow-up of women 21 to 39 years old at entry to the BWHS, BMI increased by an average of 1.6 kg/[m.sup.2], or 0.4 kg/[m.sup.2] per year, equivalent to a weight gain of approx.1.1 kg/year. The proportion of women who were obese increased from 24% in 1995 to 32% in 1999. Childbearing influenced BMI gain among BWHS participants. The BMI of women who had a child increased more than that of nulliparous women, and women who had a first child gained more weight than those who had a second or a later child. The weight gain associated with childbearing increased as baseline BMI increased and was appreciable among the obese women. For example, among women 25 to 29 years old with a baseline BMI of 36, the BMI increase of those who had a first child was an estimated 1.1 kg/[m.sup.2] more than the increase in nulliparous women, equivalent to a difference in weight gain of approx.3.0 kg. Low level of exercise was a strong predictor of weight gain in the BWHS, in accord with many studies. There was no association found between total caloric intake and the percent of calories from fat in 1995 with weight gain. In summary, the present data indicate that childbearing among African-American women increases weight gain. The childbearing-related gain increases as baseline BMI increases and accounts for an appreciable part of the total gain among heavier women. Interventions to prevent obesity in African-American women should discourage excessive weight gain during pregnancy and encourage weight loss after the pregnancy, particularly among women who are already overweight.
Because weight control is big business, countless numbers of bogus quick weight loss plans are available. Kay Stanfill, a registered dietician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, offers some advice on how to determine the truth about weight loss: Does the plan require that you do absolutely nothing? (Lose weight while you sleep, etc.) “Losing weight without any effort is a fantasy that we all share. But if a person is trying to be healthy, he or she will have to learn to change ingrained behaviors–namely eating and exercising habits.” Does the diet radically skew your eating habits, such as the “pineapple diet,” the “cottage cheese diet,” etc.? Diets which restrict a persons choices generally are doomed from the start. If adhered to for a long time, they cant provides sufficient nutrition. Also, “if a person restricts anything from his or her diet–you usually can bet that that will become his or her next |binge food. There is nothing like deprivation to make people crave a particular food.”

> Installing banners can be a one-person job thanks to the Sure-Twist Banner Bar from FFr. This banner bar allows one person to position banners without assistance. The bar is designed to let the installer know when the banner bar is attached securely from the ceiling. The single bar with three hanging holes slides easily onto a 1-inch ceiling grid, locking securely into place with one twist, meaning any banner can be hung evenly, quickly and securely with one easy lift motion.
FRITH STREET GALLERY Banner achieves a remarkable range of forms by expanding full stops in different fonts to 1800 point size and then projecting them into three-dimensional objects: cubes, spheres, ellipsoids, and other less orthodox shapes of quite varying sizes. Placed around the floor of the gallery, these sculptural presences require the viewer to navigate a passage through the space rather than simply move across it, recalling the way in which periods help populate the narrative landscape with identifiable features to be negotiated. With Banners “Full Stops,” the deliberation involved in such maneuvers is particularly striking because of the otherwise ephemeral nature of the works. Being polystyrene, a disposable substance that usually occupies the space around an object (in packaging, for instance), they possess only a qualified palpability. Conversely, it is the drawings of periods in the same enlarged point size, with their thickly overworked blocks of solid graphite, that signify a more thorough-going materiality. Pl aced low on large sheets of paper, as a period appears at the base of a line of type, the dense sheen of the graphite seems to weigh down the lower edge of the paper, which is only loosely fastened to the wall. Seen in conjunction with one another, the sculptures and drawings cause a sequence of slippages between image, word (both written and spoken), object, and idea. Beyond all this is the knowledge that these works are made possible only through the incorporation of computer technology into the printing process. A “dot matrix” period, for example, is four circles arranged in a square, while the “Grafitti” stop drawing explodes Outward from a central area into a spray of droplets and “ink” mist, myriad carefully worked blobs and dots that cover much of the paper. Here, type is revealed as a set of instructions within which it is possible to incorporate the workings of chance, so that each period, even if it is recognizably in the same font, is unique.

Winning legal aid is now harder than ever. The Governments pounds 2bn legal aid budget is fixed and is split between both criminal and civil cases. Criminal cases, where defendants have a right to legal representation, take the lions share of the cash. RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. — Melissa Data today announced the release of Express Entry, a software program that allows call center and service center agents to improve the speed and accuracy of data entry. Powered by Melissa Datas CASS Certified(TM) address correction engine, Express Entry works by reducing the number of keystrokes needed to input a mailing address and then validating the completed record to U.S. Postal Service specifications. Express Entry can eliminate up to 39 keystrokes for each record. Once the address is standardized, the record can then be transferred to any application running in the background including a form letter, spreadsheet, database or CRM program. If an input address is not able to be verified, Express Entry provides options for selecting near matches. Express Entry identifies and corrects data errors at the critical entry point, giving organizations more confidence in the information they collect and put into storage systems. Among the benefits of clean, accurate data are lower operational costs, improved mail deliveries and respect from customers or partners.
FROM THE EARLIEST TYPEWRITER TO THE MOST MODERN COMPUTER KEYBOARD, THERES BEEN REMARKABLY LITTLE CHANGE IN OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF DATA ENTRY-DATA ENTRY STILL REQUIRES THE HUMAN TOUCH.Holleriths inspiration came from two sources: trains and looms. From observing a train conductor punch tickets, he hatched the idea of punch caixl-assisted data entry. he used a punch card-driven loom, invented in the early 180Os by a French silk weaver called Joseph-Marie Jacquard, for his tabulation machine. From this prototype, he developed a mechanism that could read the presence or absence of holes in the cards by using spring-mounted nails that passed through the holes to make electrical connections. The finished model was an automatic electrical tabulating machine with a large number of clock-like counters that accumulated the results. By means of switches, operator could instruct the machine to examine each card for certain characteristics, such as profession, gender, marital status, number of children, and so on. When a card was detected that met the specified criteria, an electrically controlled sorting mechanism could gather those cards into a separate container. In addition to solving the census problem. Holleriths machines proved themselves to have wide application to statistical tasks; their fundamental principles eventually formed the basis of the development of the digital computer. In fact. IBMs punch card technology was used in computers up until the late 1970s.

post Equipment Leasing

August 21st, 2008

Before begging your reluctant banker for a loan, consider an option that keeps many small businesses afloat: leasing. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, 80 percent of all U.S. companies lease all or some of their equipment. Most established businesses prefer leasing to avoid technical obsolescence without overspending. According to the Equipment Leasing Association of America (ELA), 77 percent of all leased high-tech equipment in the computer industry is either replaced or upgraded within 24 months.Greg Loeschke of Farm Credit Leasing in Minneapolis advises customers not to confuse loans with leases. A loan requires a [company] to invest a down payment in the equipment, or a first-and-last payment, and to finance the remaining amount, whereas a lease requires no down payment and finances only the value of the equipment expected to be depleted during the lease term, he says. Securing a loan usually requires the borrower to pledge other assets for collateral, while collateral is usually not needed to secure a lease.
Equipment leasing showed only modest growth in 1991, reflecting the effects of the economic downturn. The cost of equipment added through leasing, measured by original cost of the equipment, is estimated at $124 billion for 1991, compared with $120 billion in 1990. During the past several years, leasing has been estimated to represent about 32 percent of private, nonresidential purchases of producers durable equipment. According to an industry survey, growth in 1990 was led by office machines and followed closely by small computer systems and construction equipment. Strong growth also was detected in industrial equipment and computer peripherals. Software is a new category for this survey and will be monitored to identify any growth patterns. When comparing growth rates for the periods 1988-1989 and 1989-1990, computer peripherals showed the greatest growth, followed closely by telecommunications, aircraft, small computer systems and industrial equipment. Railroad equipment showed the greatest decline in growth. However, in terms of total cost of equipment added by type, aircraft continues to dominate the market for leasing companies and, for the first time since the survey separated activity for office machines and computer mainframes, the former has surpassed the latter.
Weve all heard that old adage, it takes money to make money. We all need equipment to do our jobs and deliver our products or services - and that equipment costs money. or does it. As businesses continue to compete in the new economy, many are searching for proven new ways to address their equipment financing challenges. The choice for many businesses is clear: equipment leasing. Equipment leasing affords companies the ability to leverage their capital, control cash flow and acquire needed equipment. But why do companies lease equipment? There are a variety of reasons: leasing offers a valuable financing package that allows companies to maximize their purchasing power; factoring all benefits in, leasing is often the least expensive financing method; and leasing equipment transfers the risk of technological obsolesence from the lessee to the lessor.

You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. Reinforcing metal behind the face edge of the teeth of StructurALL bimetal band saw blades adds rigidity and strength to each tooth when sawing structurals and tubing. This permits heavier feed forces for higher cutting rates. Precision ground blades result in smooth chip flow and increased fatigue life. M 42 Cobalt cutting edge improves wear resistance. Positive rake allows aggressive cutting. Tests show these blades outperform other blades by 30 percent when cutting tubing, pipe, structurals, and bundled materials. Extended blade life, less resharpening and material specialization are among the latest improvements in saw blades. Longer blade life and the quality of cut are the two most important attributes of circular saw blades, according to Tony Colangelo, president of F.S. Tools. When cutting solid woods, especially exotic woods, greater emphasis is placed on minimizing waste and a thinner blade is required, he said. The advanced carbide grades that are utilized today and the tolerances that are maintained in the saw blades also have improved saw blades, said Scott Erikson, vice president of engineering at Leuco Tool Corp.

The Chiropractor, however, would be one of the longest lasting and best known of chiropractic periodicals (continuing in monthly publication until November/December 1961), and serving multiple functions along the way. Not the least of these would be its role as the “official organ” of the several professional societies BJ. founded and led: the Universal Chiropractors Association (todays ACA) and the Chiropractic Health Bureau (todays ICA).The masthead indicated that the new periodical was published by the Palmer School of Chiropractic and copyrighted by B.J. Palmer. Single copies were available for 5 cents each, or a years subscription for 50 cents, “which may be sent in postage stamps.” The first issue listed a number of articles on its cover:This first issue made what was probably liberal use of photographic images, in addition to the more standard line drawings of the times. Among the imagery was a photo of Harvey Lillard, one of the elder Palmers (the photo would appear again in various advertisements and in a textbook, The Science of Chiropractic, published by B.J. in 1906); and a picture of Old Dad Chiros class in Santa Barbara, California, during July 1903.
It is unlikely that you became a chiropractor to work in an ER. Imagine my surprise when members of our hospitals chiropractic department were asked to take a call in the emergency department (ED)! We are now in our second year of providing chiropractic coverage to the ED. In November 2000, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, New Jersey began offering chiropractic care in the ED. In an effort to satisfy the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditations mandate to better address pain management, Meadowlands ED Director Gina Puglisi,MD, and Albert Cataffi,DC, former chiropractic department chief, developed and instituted a “chiropractor on-call” program. Dr. Puglisi readied the chiropractors with an orientation program to define the roles of the chiropractors and the rest of the ED in treating neck and back pain patients. Patients who present to the ED with neck or back pain are screened by the attending ED physician, who is responsible for ruling out serious pathology, fracture, neurological deficit, and other findings that might contraindicate spinal manipulation. The ED physician may order x-rays, blood work or other diagnostic tests. When a severe condition presents, orthopedists, neurologists or neurosurgeons are enlisted to take over the case. Historically, all patients without serious pathology were given prescriptions and discharged from the hospital, with or without adequate relief. With our chiropractor-on-call program, the ED physician now has the option of calling for a chiropractic consultation, which gives the patient the opportunity to receive additional relief.
The newly merged Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC) has awarded the Chiropractor of the Year award to two doctors - Drs. Christophe Dean and Thomas Klapp, who were honored for their outstanding commitment and leadership in the advancement of chiropractic in Michigan. The dual award marks the recent successful merger of the Michigan Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS). Dr. Dean, a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, has been a chiropractor since 1975. He has served on the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC) board of directors and was elected MCCs president in 2004. Dr. Klapp graduated cum laude from Life Chiropractic College in 1979. He served as MCA president before the merger and now serves as MAC chairman. This is the third time he has been honored with the Chiropractor of the Year award.

WAYLAND, Mass.–(BW HealthWire)–Sept. 16, 1999– A panel of noted experts will discuss, as well as demonstrate, a number of innovative cosmetic procedures, including laser hair removal, on Oprah Winfreys hour-long program on cosmetic surgery airing today throughout the U.S. Gerard E. Puorro, Candelas President and Chief Executive Officer, stated: As evidenced by this show, interest on the part of the media and public in laser hair removal continues to grow, and for good reason. Todays lasers have evolved to the point where they can now deliver treatments that are fast, effective, comfortable and affordable, making laser hair removal an increasingly attractive option.
SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BW HealthWire)–May 17, 1999– Coherent, Inc. (Nasdaq: COHR) announced today the LightSheer(TM) SC–the first high-performance diode laser hair removal system at a moderate price–at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgerys annual meeting. With the introduction of the SC, Coherents state-of-the-art technology is now accessible to a broader physician audience. The LightSheer SC, like the other LightSheer products, features the ability to offer permanent hair reduction and treat the widest array of skin types. It also features the patented ChillTip(TM), which cools and protects the skin for optimum patient comfort and safety. The SCs compact design and user-friendly controls make it easily adaptable to any practice.
Self conscious about unwanted hair growth? Youre not alone. In fact, last year laser hair removal was one of the five most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. with nearly one million people treated. More and more men are having unwanted hair removed from their backs, shoulders, chests and necks. Women frequently have hair removed from their faces, legs, arms and trunks. Hair can safely be removed from any part of the body. But dont expect the results to be permanent. You can make a very visible difference and significantly reduce hair growth through a series of laser treatments. The Gentlelase by Candela is one of the most advanced hair removal lasers available today. This laser emits a beam of light that penetrates three to five millimeters through the skin to the bulb of the hair shaft where it is absorbed by the melanin that gives hair its color. The heat from this laser damages the bulb of the hair shaft and its blood supply without affecting the surrounding skin. The hair follicle remains intact but becomes miniaturized. This thermal damage impairs hair re-growth over time.

Business offers home inspections A new home inspection business opened Monday in northeast Kansas. TCS Building Inspection Services Inc., owned by Tom and Cheryl Swayne, offers home inspections and radon testing. The Meriden-based business serves northeast and north central Kansas. The business provides visual inspections of a homes electrical, plumbing and heating and air conditioning systems as well as its structure, interior and exterior.
HOME-BASED BUSINESSToday, home-based businesses run the gamut from consulting firms and advertising agencies to photography studios and free-lance writing services. According to Scott Clark in the Houston Business Journal, home-based businesses create more than 8,000 new jobs each day and generate nearly $400 billion in annual revenues. In fact, such well-known companies as Amway, Ben and Jerrys, Dominos Pizza, Estee Lauder, Hallmark, and Nike all started as home-based businesses. The main driving force behind the growth of home-based businesses is the increasing capability and availability of computer and communications technology. Powerful yet affordable home computer systems equipped with modems allow people to send and receive messages, transfer data, and conduct research from their homes, largely eliminating the need to commute to a place of employment. Similarly, sophisticated software programs offering applications in desktop publishing, database management, financial management, and word processing enable one individual to do the work formerly handled by an entire support staff. In addition, the widespread use of cellular phones, pagers, voice mail systems, and toll-free telephone numbers has enhanced the ability of home-based business owners to remain connected to the outside business world. In all, rapid improvements in technology have enabled large numbers of home-based business people to earn the same income they could at a regular jobs while also gaining a number of life-style benefits. Another important factor in the growth of home-based businesses is the transformation of the American economy from a product orientation to a service orientation. Since service businesses generally have no need to store inventory or run production machinery, they are less disruptive and more adaptable to a neighborhood environment.
OAKLAND — Despite concerns about increasing demand to build homes on land now reserved for industrial uses, the Oakland City Council voted Tuesday to allow 366 new homes to be built near the Elmhurst neighborhood in East Oakland. Three owners of nearby businesses had appealed a city Planning Commission decision to approve the Pulte Homes project, dubbed Arcadia Park, saying it would create a “domino effect” and push their businesses out of Oakland. “This project is about revitalizing long-forgotten areas,” said Councilmember Larry Reid, whose Elmhurst-East Oakland district includes the project, which is not expected to be complete until 2007.

All this has led to confusion about the combination of reflectivity and emissivity that would bring the most benefit to a building owner. LEED version 2.2, released last October, is the first national specification to use a relatively new measure of reporting a cool roofs properties. LEED 2.2 sustainable sites credit 7.2 states that to receive one point, building owners should use a roof with a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 78 over at least 75 percent of the roofs surface for roofs with slopes less than 2:12. The new twist is SRI, a unit developed by scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. SRI incorporates reflectivity and emissivity properties into one, easy-to-read, standardized measure so that roof buyers wont have to scratch their heads and try to figure out if a high reflectivity and low emissivity is better or worse than a medium reflectivity and high emissivity. SRI is calculated with a complex formula spelled out in ASTM E1980 and is a scale of 1 to 100 that is a measure of a roofs combined thermal properties. It is defined so that a standard black (reflectance 0.05, emittance 0.90) is 0 and a standard white (reflectance 0.80, emittance 0.90) is 100. But some hot roofs can have negative values, and some white thermoplastics and white roof coatings have scored as high as 104 to 110.

Nursing home care in Utah is improving, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Wednesday. Many of those improvements were linked directly by care center administrators to a quality improvement project through HealthInsight, Medicares Quality Improvement Organization in Utah. The organization is part of the national Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on raising standards of care in nursing homes across the country and giving consumers more comparison information.
A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery. “We hope to build around the home improvement theme within the shopping center,” Archiniaco said. “This is a theme that has been proven in many successful specialty shopping centers.”

There is no known way to prevent uterine cancer. But, knowing your risk factors for this gynecologic cancer can help you be more aware of it. For example, women with a family history of early onset colorectal cancer or other reproductive cancers may have an increased risk for uterine cancer. The cancers in these families may be caused by a genetic predisposition to cancer called hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer, or HNPCC. Women with HNPCC have a 40 to 60 percent chance of developing endometrial cancer. The following tips may help you reduce your risks for developing uterine cancer: * Control your blood pressure by exercising, reducing dietary salt, and when necessary taking medication.

Two of Virginias neighboring states, Maryland and West Virginia–each a longtime haven for outdoorsmen–are taking very different approaches to youth hunting. If passed, this bill will have a devastating effect on recruiting young hunters and the future of wildlife conservation in Maryland, said Rob Sexton, USSA vice president for government affairs. The bill is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the future of hunting. Parents, not the government, are far more equipped to know when their sons and daughters are ready to hunt. House Bill 655 has been referred to the House Environmental Matters Committee in Maryland. The devastating effect Sexton mentions not only damages efforts to introduce youngsters to hunting, but it also will impact the states economy.

Politics and Trade The failure of EU countries to sign a European Union constitution will not directly affect the way we trade. The delay in agreeing the constitution was basically due to the demands of France and Germany for a “double majority” voting system. This may not seem serious. However, a number of traders at export meetings have expressed their concerns that France and Germany at closing ranks to create a power base, which may slow down economic growth across Europe. What a fantastic gathering of exporters! As well as lunch for nearly 300 exporters at the Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel, this annual gathering organised by the Southern Branch of the Institute of Export included an exhibition, seminars on trading in Hong Kong and South Africa. This year, for the first time, the meeting opened at 10.30am allowing visitors to spend plenty of time networking.
Export successes At a time when a number of exporters have said to me that the high pound and the euro are affecting their sales, I thought that it might be useful to give a few examples of successes in exporting where there is considerable competition.
EXPORTINGExporting is sometimes thought of as a practice that is largely the province of large businesses and international corporations, but exporting can also be helpful to a small business in a variety of ways. A small business that establishes its products in the international marketplace can increase sales and profitability, enhance its domestic reputation, reduce its dependence on domestic markets, reinvigorate the sales potential of existing products, stabilize seasonal market fluctuations, sell excess production capacity, and increase awareness of possible foreign competitors.

IF youre setting out to explore the real Spain, a room in a parador is the icing on the cake, or the turret on the castle if you like. There are more than 80 parador hotels in Spain and most have been converted from old buildings such as palaces, castles, convents and monasteries. They are not particularly cheap - bed and breakfast costs from around pounds 35 per person per night to a whopping pounds 90 at the more popular paradors.
The Klingmans usually look abroad for inspiration. Past gingerbread projects have included Scotlands Eilean Donan Castle and Bavarias Neuschwanstein Castle. On the wow scale, this one takes the cake. A series of gingerbread structures link together to form the massive college. Ice cream cones form the turrets and spires; Fig Newton cookies stand for chimneys; waffle pretzels create the hundreds of windows and wafer cookies shape the circular driveway, all topped off with a dusting of powdered sugar snow.

It is difficult to write objectively and dispassionately of something about which one feels strongly, for or against. Tell me a mans a foxhunter and I loves him at once said Mr Jorrocks. Today he is more likely to be an object of censure, Mr Jorrocks too. The future of hunting hangs in the balance, a prospect unthinkable to Will Ogilvie who wrote in the twenties:
By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.

Governments, where is the stability? With the latest election result in Italy, (our eighth biggest export market), there will be further uncertainty even after a new Government is formed. We have seen Germany (our second biggest export market) struggle towards its Grand Coalition. It suffers high unemployment, its economy is sluggish, but its export sales are high.

The highlight was the home industries tent, where women had been beavering away for months to compete for the trophy of most competent housewife. In one corner were the flower arrangements: best dried flowers, best wedding cake adornment and best single stem in a candleholder. Then there was the needlework section: a square of orange fluff won first prize for knit and purl, and a Barbie in a cream poncho won most impractical dollys outfit. But the food tables were the real treat. There were rosettes for Scotch eggs, potato salad, sherry trifle, small jars of meat paste, raspberry cordial, Scotch pancakes, Dundee cake, suet pudding, jam tarts, cock-a-leekie soup, vegetarian quiche, cauliflower cheese and brandy snaps. Entries had two small bites taken out of each side. This year there had been a new addition: kebabs. They sat neatly in a row, made of pork, tomato halves and green peppers. Entries were garnished with parsley or hundreds and thousands and placed on simple white china. The pastry was thick and crispy, the cakes stuffed with currants and the Scotch pancakes looked plump and content. Everything was of a perfect beigeness. No diver-picked scallops with griddled foie gras, or aged zamorano manchego with membrillo. No roast trelough duck breast with wok-fried sugar snaps or deep-fried tuna nori rolls with pickled daikon. It was heaven. Not a trace of new-English ponciness - horseradish remoulades or jellied rabbit with prunes - not a hint of Pacific Rim kangaroo, Japanese wasabi flying fish roe, pot-bellied Vietnamese or boiled egg Ethiopian. It was old Scottish - what you read was what you got, no surprises - just lots of white flour, white sugar and powdered eggs to accompany the occasional well-boiled vegetable, all conspiring to create a comforting, untampered blandness.
The unravelling of the global telecom industry is now playing like a macabre later instalment of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, sticking to a familiar script but seeking to up the visceral thrills with yet more intense horror and violence. WorldComs big $3.8 billion lie is truly a stunner and will effect the industry long after last months sectoral stock crash is forgotten. This will have some profound effects. The door will now be very firmly closed on financing for new telco investment. Managements who have engaged in any form of selective disclosure or contestable reporting practices will now be liabilities and must be shown the exit. And, politicians and regulators who previously saw some benefit in providing accommodation to the subsidy and rent-seeking claims of telecoms will now more likely turn the other way.

Gasoline prices could ignite change for anglers Several days ago, Casey Kidder lamented that anglers around Topeka have been confounded this spring by a rather long spell of trying fishing and escalating gasoline prices. Kidder is a young, thoughtful and ardent bass fisher, and he also is a young journalist who lives on a limited budget. Consequently, the increase in the cost of gasoline has made a significant impingement upon his fishing budget.

With gusts of over 30 knots blasting over the Holy Loch, several dinghy sailors found it nigh on impossible to get their boats righted in the difficult conditions. In the slow dinghy class, Strathclyde Loch Sailing Clubs Crawford Reid produced two firsts in his Albacore, putting him out in front as a clear leader in the 13-strong class and Alan Milton in Pepsi took two more decisive wins in the Sigma 33 class. Cove Sailing Clubs Alan Harper in Pied Piper sealed a championship win with a second and fourth, while Clyde Cruising Clubs Donald Sharp had two good wins and lifted the IRC Class 2 crown.
Squalls ripped through the southern Pacific yesterday, knocking down at least three of the 13 yachts still competing in the BOC round-the-world solo race. An American, Arnet Taylor Jnr, and two Britons, Robin Davie and Harry Mitchell, reported being knocked over. Christophe Auguin, of France, turned in another 300-mile day to remain solidly in the lead. His countryman Jean Luc Van den Heede, however, sailed a straighter course to cut Auguins advantage down to 142 miles from 239 just two days earlier.

A third-party document-destruction company also facilitates better use of file space because less space is required for unneeded records. It also limits exposure to the new Federal Rule 26 concerning electronic discovery, which requires an entity to produce all records requested within 85 days of a discovery request or risk summary finding against the individual or business. Legally disposing of end-of-retention records decreases the time and effort needed to search for files. Outsourcing document-destruction also saves time and money because the individual or company no longer needs to own or lease, and then maintain, a consumer shredder designed to handle only a few sheets of paper at a time. Commercial shredders easily handle thick files, metal clips, and staples. A typical banker box of files weighs approximately 60 pounds. A commercial shredder can shred 30 to 50 such boxes per hour. Finally, 17 trees are saved for every ton of paper that is shredded and recycled, so using a commercial shredder also helps the environment because all shred is recycled rather than used as landfill.
Never before in the history of American business has a global corporation been destroyed by acts directly related to document retention and destruction In early December 2001, Enron Corp., a large Houstonbased energy company, filed for bankruptcy, one of the largest such actions in U.S. business history. In the weeks that followed, a series of allegations of financial mismanagement and possible violations of law - began to surface. The affair soon began to spill over to Arthur Andersen, Enrons outside auditing and accounting firm. Among the allegations were charges that officials of Andersens Houston office, who were responsible for managing Enrons audits, had illegally destroyed paper and electronic documents related to their representation of Enron.

Abstract The paper studies the dynamic interactions among indicators of economic activity, such as industrial production, interest rate and exchange rate, the performance of the foreign stock market, oil prices, and stock returns to examine whether economic activity movements affect the performance of the stock market for Greece. The empirical evidence suggests that stock returns do not lead changes in real economic activity while the macroeconomic activity and foreign stock market changes explain only partially stock market movements. Oil price changes explain stock price movements and have a negative impact on macroeconomic activity. (JEL E44, GI 15) The interrelation between economic variables and oil price changes has received considerable attention, mainly for most industrialized countries. In a pioneer work, Hamilton (1983) using Granger causality examined the impact of oil price shocks on the U.S. economy from 1949 to 1972. Hamilton finds that changes in oil prices Granger-caused changes in GNP whereas oil prices were determined exogenously. Later, other researchers extended Hamiltons basic findings using alternative data and estimation procedures (Burbidge and Harrison 1984; Gisser and Goodwin 1986; Mork 1986; Ferderer 1996).
Money Talks Most savvy investors know that the stock market experiences both bull and bear markets. Clearly there are times when small stocks outperform large stocks, or when growth stocks outperform value stocks. However, there are also times when the opposite of each of these occurs. The problem is that market cycles have proven to be inherently unpredictable, making it next to impossible to be consistently successful at market timing on a long-term basis.

The Museum of Yachting at Newport, Rhode Island, has added another vintage yacht to its fleet. On 28 June the fully-restored cutter Hawk, designed in 1948 by Knud Reimers, sailed across a few miles of lower Narragansett Bay from the Jamestown Boat Yard. After a long career of being stored at various boat yards, her owners Clem Napolitano, Stephen Devoe and Chris Otorowski of the Jamestown Boat Yard gave Hawk to the Museum.
The International Yacht Restoration School on the waterfront of Newport, Rhode Island, reports additional progress on its major restoration project, the last remaining luxury American yacht, Coronet, built in 1885. It is a longterm project and was mentioned in this column in April 1996.In the july 1938 issue of Country Life and the Sportsman, we learned that Coronet, 152 tons, began her illustrious career by defeating Dauntless in a mid-winter race from New York to Queenstown. She covered the 2905 miles in 14 days, 19 hours and three minutes and 14 seconds.Soon after that race she sailed around the world. That was followed with four voyages to Europe and two to the West Indies. The article also noted that Coronet was the first registered yacht to round Cape Horn from east to west. The item concluded, “She was a great ship and a brave one.” There is no question that the IYRS will make her a “great ship and a brave one.”

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
